How Did a Buddha Statue Reach Viking-Age Sweden?

A 1,500-Year-Old Buddha Found in Sweden — How Did It Reach Viking-Age Scandinavia?

A small bronze statue of the Buddha, discovered at Helgö in Sweden, offers a remarkable glimpse into the long-distance connections of the ancient world.

Unearthed during archaeological excavations in the 1950s, the approximately 8.4 cm-tall figurine is generally dated to around the 5th–6th century CE. Researchers have suggested that it may have originated in the Swat Valley, in present-day Pakistan.

Helgö was an important settlement and trading centre during the early medieval period. Archaeological finds from the site include objects associated with distant regions, highlighting the movement of goods and cultural influences across vast distances.

How the Buddha reached Sweden remains uncertain. The figurine nevertheless raises fascinating questions about the networks that connected South Asia with Scandinavia long before modern global travel.

Today, the Helgö Buddha is preserved at the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm.
